Welcome to Global Scholars Academy Mandarin Class中文课. My name is Xi Wang. I am so excited to teach your child Mandarin Chinese this year. This is going to be a cycle full of fun, learning, and lots of creative activities. We will have singing, movement, reader’s theater, language games, and hands-on projects.
I am originally from Tianjin, the city near Beijing, China. In 2000, I came to the U. S. to pursue an education. I obtained my first BS degree in Biology from Meredith College, and second BS in Nursing at East Carolina University. I have Early Childhood Education credential from American Montessori Society, and I taught at a Montessori school before I joined Global Scholars Academy.
During the school year, students will organize their own Chinese New Year celebration. They will participate in a North Carolina Chinese language contest.
As part of my dedication to broadening students’ mind, I value global awareness and understanding of other cultures. Apart from learning about the basics in Mandarin Chinese, we will also learn about the customs and cultures of different Chinese speaking countries. Moreover, they will learn to respect, love, and care for each other.
GSA Mandarin Class Curriculum
In Kindergarten, grades 1, and 2, students are introduced to the most basic words and concepts such as numbers, classifiers, senses and body parts. They learn about the pictorial graphic origin of Chinese characters and Chinese culture covering likes of Spring Festival and the twelve zodiac signs. Through songs, poems, tongue twisters and riddles, students learn to express months, locations, and make self-introduction to new friends.
Beginning in grade 3, the focus is moved to building abilities in reading and understanding characters through stories of legend, holidays and food making among other topics. Through grade 4 and 5, students learn to use dictionaries, make sentences, and look for overall themes in reading.
In grades 6, 7, and 8, the focus is transitioned to building overall communication skills. Lessons increasingly incorporate topics in history, music, technology, and medicine among other disciplines. Practices and discussions are built around students’ vocabulary for retention and applications.
