North Carolina Programs Selected to Participate in the USED/NASA STEM Challenge

As highlighted during the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Summer Institute in 2016, the U.S. Department of Education has partnered with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to provide engaging experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in our schools. Selected 21st CCLC sites across 20 states will participate in a special project called the USED/NASA STEM Challenge. These agencies are collaborating to align resources and address the national need for a STEM-educated workforce by bringing authentic, hands-on STEM and citizen science activities to students in grades 5–8.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction identified nine 21st CCLC programs in the state that are strongly focused on STEM activities and has submitted a collective application for North Carolina to participate in the USED/NASA STEM Challenge. Fortunately, all nine sites were approved! The selected programs are as follows:
